WFH (Workout from home) for GOOD
Why I will never sacrifice hundreds of dollars every month to workout
For the past two years, I have been throwing my hard-earned money at fitness classes and gym memberships. It’s sad to say but I felt the need break my bank for a good workout. Why? Because, as adults who don’t get interaction with others outside of work, I enjoyed the sense of community that came with attending a gym session or pilates class. My life felt more exciting with these designated time slots set aside just to workout with a bunch of strangers.
The downfall of this lifestyle was that I found myself spending $200 EVERY MONTH. This included my gym membership at LA Fitness, my membership at Classpass, and another membership at another location because Classpass limits users on how many credits you can take per studio.
While this was completely 100% my decision to spend so much money on fitness, I feel like many other people can relate to this sentiment. WE PAY MONEY TO FORCE OURSELVES TO COMMIT TO WORKING OUT.
Now that quarantine has been in effect for the past 3 months, I’ve come to the realization that the world doesn’t need to burn their wallets to get active. Perhaps you’re a passionate weight lifter who’s trying to do competitions or power cycling is your forte but, if you’re like me who just wants to get a sweat in every day and keep your blood flowing, save your pennies and find the motivation to workout at home.
Some workouts I’ve been enjoying during this time at home:
Whitney Simmons has been posting circuit-based workouts on both Instagram and her new Alive app. I did these mostly in the beginning of quarantine and they’re great if you have weights already at home.
For anyone who loves high-intensity workouts that challenge your strength and cardio, you can get a good sweat in with rachaelgoodeats. These workouts are KILLER and mostly require no equipment to do. You can follow her circuit workouts on her Instagram posts or workout live with her and Bridget, but you can expect to be on the floor dying like I was by the end of the video.
My sister and I have been particularly loving rrayyme’s live Instagram workouts, led by her boyfriend Nate who is a CrossFit trainer. The reason we keep coming back to these workouts every week is because they’re functional, easy to follow, challenging, and you can’t help but fall in love with Remi and Nate’s couple compatibility.
MadFit ditched the gym years ago to find a way to get stronger at home, similarly to the lifestyle we’ve been all trying to adjust to recently. If you’ve been following Maddie, you know that she is extremely fit and creative. Why these workouts are so beloved on Youtube is because there is something for everyone: low impact, no weights, yoga-focused, and more. MadFit also has cardio dance workout videos which I personally haven’t seen anywhere else online. Her videos are usually themed to a song, exercise type, or muscle group and they last 10-20 minutes each. I recommend doing 2-3 a day to get a full body burn.
Chloe Ting’s popularity has been going off the charts since quarantine began for good reason. If you want to get abs and a booty like her Youtube video titles suggest, look no further than Chloe’s FREE 2-week workout plans on her website. My friends and I did the 2-week shred challenge and we all agree that Chloe’s program was the ass-kicking we all needed.
Lately, I found this amazing website called Spotebi online with free short workout videos and minimalist-inspired illustrations to help you get through intense workouts. Each exercise lasts around 30-45 seconds, back to back with almost no breaks in between. For anyone who is on a time crunch, I would highly recommend looking at these guides on their site to get a quick burn in.
These are just suggestions from my personal experience but the possibilities are endless! Most importantly, take this opportunity of working out without an establishment to get outside as well. I’ve been running quite a bit lately and recently signed up for a 10k in October! Never in a million years did I ever see myself doing workouts outside of a facility, let alone find the inspiration to do a marathon someday.

Much Aloha,
